Tell us a bit about your role
I am a postdoctoral researcher in computational biology in Prof. Adam Mead group at MRC Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine. I obtained her PhD from Chinese Academy of Sciences and University of Aberdeen, where I was trained as a computational biologist and part-time physiologist.
After my PhD, I was keen on adapting her bioinformatics skills to help develop cancer therapies using state-of-the-art single cell -omics techniques and then I joined Oxford in 2019 working on myeloid blood malignancies especially myelofibrosis.
I am developing a computational pipeline to analyse cell-cell interactions using single cell transcriptomics data, which can be applied to different disease models to find potential treatment targets.
What is the most meaningful aspect of your work?
Using single cell technologies, we can get a better resolution of cellular heterogeneity, which will facilitate drug development for cancer patients.
Can you tell us about something you've done, contributed to that you're most proud of?
As a female computational biologist, the most exciting thing for me is to encourage more young female students to get involved in computational biology and coding. During my PhD, two female undergraduate students worked with is now pursuing their career in computational science and computational biology.
What changes would you most like to see in the Medical Sciences in the next 100 years?
More rare diseases/cancers can be cured or at least properly treated with the development of medical sciences; More female scientist leaders in this field.
