About AMIIC
The Acute Multidisciplinary Imaging and Interventional Centre (AMIIC) has been launched in its current form in June 2022, and is led by Professor Charalambos Antoniades, British Heart Foundation Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford. AMIIC comprises of three pillars: (a) Big Data/Artificial Intelligence (b) Advanced photon counting Computed Tomography Imaging (c) Invasive imaging and interventions (interventional suite).
The Acute Multidisciplinary Imaging and Interventional Centre (AMIIC) has been launched in its current form in June 2022, and is led by Professor Charalambos Antoniades, British Heart Foundation Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford.
AMIIC comprises of three pillars:
(a) Big Data/Artificial Intelligence
(b) Advanced photon counting Computed Tomography Imaging
(c) Invasive imaging and interventions (interventional suite).
This is the world’s first facility that hosts a hybrid photon-counting CT scanner joined with an interventional suite, also supported by a big data/artificial intelligence facility embeded into the centre. It accommodates the work of an interactive consortium of clinical investigators from University Departments and the NHS, across a range of specialties.
The centre delivers state of the art multidisciplinary research by providing the research infrastructure linking interventional, non-invasive imaging (photon counting CT), and artificial intelligence/big data capabilities. At the same time, the centre supports education and clinical training as well as clinical care, by working together with the Medical Sciences Division and Oxford University Hospitals NHSFT.
AMIIC is positioned adjacent to the Emergency Department and the Heart Centre at the John Radcliffe Hospital and is a purpose-designed clinical research centre embedded in an NHS-hospital environment. The centre contains a level 2 recovery bay with facilities for full medical support post procedures requiring anaesthesia. The centre supports several clinical services, including interventional cardiology, neuroradiology, neurosurgery and several non-invasive imaging services such as the cardiac CT service of Oxford University Hospitals.
The centre was initially built through grants from the Medical Research Council, British Heart Foundation, Wellcome Trust, Department of Health, Wolfson Institute, Dunhill Medical Trust, Foundation Leducq, University of Oxford, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre, and Oxford Hospitals Charity (Acute Vascular Imaging Centre) and it was refurbished to become a multidisciplinary imaging and interventional centre with funding from the Medical sciences Division, The Radcliffe Department of Medicine, Oxford University Hospitals NHSFT and the British Heart Foundation.
