Head of Division

The Division of Cardiovascular Medicine (CVM) is home to an internationally leading academic programme in cardiology and cardiovascular medicine. We aim to achieve the highest standards in research, clinical care and teaching.

We seek to understand the broad range of mechanisms underlying cardiovascular disease and to use this to focus on translational research (spanning from molecular biology through to clinical application). We adopt a multi-disciplinary approach involving biologists, clinicians, medicinal chemists, physicists, computer scientists and statisticians. The division has a close and longstanding relationship with the British Heart Foundation and is a central component of Oxford's BHF Centre of Research Excellence.

We are a multi-site division, with our administrative base, together with laboratories for molecular and cellular studies, in the West Wing of the John Radcliffe Hospital. Our clinical research is currently largely focused around the Oxford Centre for Clinical Magnetic Resonance Research (OCMR) and a dedicated Cardiovascular Clinical Research Facility (CCRF). We also host the Oxford Acute Multidisciplinary Imaging and Interventional Centre (AMIIC).

Molecular genetics and model organism programmes are based in laboratories at the Centre for Human Genetics (CHG) and we maintain close links with the epidemiology work of the Clinical Trials Service Unit (CTSU)  and with cardiovascular scientists in the preclinical departments within the University of Oxford Science Area.

Our Head of Division is Professor Stefan Neubauer, who is also Clinical Director of OCMR.
