Liam Barrett

MBChB, BSc (Hons), PG Cert, MRCEM

BGS/Dunhill Medical Trust Doctoral Fellow

  • DPhil Student

Dr Barrett is an Emergency Medicine Trainee. He completed his MBChB at the University of Birmingham and holds a BSc (Hons) in Urgent and Emergency Care, as well as a PG Cert in Leadership and Management in Healthcare. Dr Barrett’s previous roles include the NIHR Academic Foundation Programme (AFP) and, more recently, an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow (ACF) in Emergency Medicine at the University of Cambridge.

With full funding from the BGS/DMT Doctoral Research Fellowship, Dr Barrett is pursuing a DPhil in Medical Sciences at the University of Oxford. Dr Barrett is a member of the Curry group investigating endothelial regulation of haemostasis in health and disease. The focus of his doctoral research is to study the effect of ageing and of blood thinners, which are increasingly prescribed in older adults, on the body’s bleeding and clotting response to traumatic injuries, such as hip fractures.

Dr Barrett’s ultimate aim is to become a senior clinical academic leading a research team seeking to improve outcomes for older adults following traumatic injury. Dr Barrett is passionate about research in older adults as they are vulnerable and neglected group in trauma research and are now the group of patients most likely to be admitted to hospital with injury.

Dr Barrett is keen to expand research in emergency medicine and encourages anyone interested in research to get in contact.
